What Farriers do
- Inspect horses’ legs and hooves while stationary and in motion to check for irregularities, interference, peculiarities or abnormalities
- Discuss with horse owners and / or trainers options for shoe type
- Remove worn or faulty shoes, observing and noting wear patterns or deformities
- Clean, trim and shape hooves using a variety of devices
- Measure hooves and make up templates to determine materials required
- Select metal and nails required for the job and cut metals in accordance with measurements
- Heat and shape shoes
- Replace and secure shoes to hooves and check all nails are aligned
- Remove and replace steel shoes from horses before and after the racing

- Employment for a minimum of four years
- Employment areas include: self-employment, contacting themselves to trainers, horse owner at trotting stables, racing stables, studs, riding clubs, training organisations and horse shows
