What Court and Parliamentary Reporters do
- Make accurate accounts of court or parliament proceedings using shorthand or a stenotype machine
- Transcribe court proceedings by using computer-aided transcription (CAT) which translates the shorthand recorded by the stenotype machine onto a computer screen
- Operate and monitor sound equipment which records all spoken words for accurate records of proceedings
- Provide a list of speakers in the court proceedings
- Produce a typed transcript of audio tapes
- Produce accurate records by editing transcripts for syntax and grammar
- During proceedings when requested, read back portions of notes or replay tapes

- Wide vocabulary and high level of literacy
- Broad general knowledge, especially in current affairs and politics
- Interest in parliament and courts and how they work

- Ability to identify and recognise environmental sounds
