Traineeship

What Court and Parliamentary Reporters do

  • Make accurate accounts of court or parliament proceedings using shorthand or a stenotype machine
  • Transcribe court proceedings by using computer-aided transcription (CAT) which translates the shorthand recorded by the stenotype machine onto a computer screen
  • Operate and monitor sound equipment which records all spoken words for accurate records of proceedings
  • Provide a list of speakers in the court proceedings
  • Produce a typed transcript of audio tapes
  • Produce accurate records by editing transcripts for syntax and grammar
  • During proceedings when requested, read back portions of notes or replay tapes

  • Sound hearing and good concentration
  • Fast and accurate shorthand
  • Good keyboard skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Wide vocabulary and high level of literacy
  • Broad general knowledge, especially in current affairs and politics
  • Interest in parliament and courts and how they work
  • Ability to adapt to new technology
  • Ability to identify and recognise environmental sounds
