What Assistant Chefs do

  • Check quality of the food
  • Regulate temperatures of cooking equipment such as ovens and grills
  • Food preparation
  • Cook food by either baking, braising, frying, roasting or steaming
  • Ensure good presentation of food and its proportions
  • Ensure cleanliness and hygiene of food preparation areas and equipment
  • Ensure food is kept at the right temperatures, including refrigeration
  • Maintain and estimate food supplies
  • Make sure kitchen is functional
  • Plan menus
  • Prepare food to meet individual dietary requirements
  • Train and supervise staff.

  • Employment areas include: hotels, motels, restaurants, clubs, cafes, cafeterias, hospitals, flight catering centres, seagoing vessels, food processing factories and large boarding schools.
