Traineeship
What Water and Waste Water Operators do
- Monitor and pump water for supply and storage and treat water to remove waste to meet the national standards
- Operate pumps, valves and gates to control the flow of water
- Check flow meters, pressure gauges, power usage and effluent water quality
- Take samples of water and carry out routine analysis and monitor the biological treatment plant process
- Keep logs detailing plant operation and write up reports
- Carry out routine servicing and cleaning of water storage facilities, plants and pipes as well as repairing faults in water supply and storage systems
- Maintain plant, reservoirs and dams facilities
- Receive, monitor and respond to remote alarms
- Operate waste disposal and water purification equipment
- Operate locks and adjust the water level in weirs
- Load and unload chemicals and control the addition of chemicals (e.g. Polymers) and the aeration of the wastewater
- Facilitate school and visitor inspections
