What Truck Drivers do
- Check brakes, oil, tyres and electrical systems
- Load goods onto the truck by hand, forklift or other lifting equipment
- Correctly place and secure the load with ropes and chains to avoid damage to the truck or the goods and cover open loads with tarpaulin
- Calculate the weight of loads to comply with limits
- Attach and remove trailers
- Change heavy tyres and clean and maintain vehicles
- Drive vehicles to their destination and unload
- Drive defensively and handle hazardous road conditions
- Check items against inventory, noting breakage and damages
- Collect payments and issue receipts
- Maintain a log book with details of trips, including rest breaks
