What Toolmakers do

  • Makes and repairs moulds, dies, jigs, fixtures, press tools that will be used to produce parts for industrial machinery
  • Make precision machinery for machine tool and other manufacturing machinery
  • Work out sizes and allowances based on their knowledge of metals, metal alloys and plastics
  • Position, measure and mark out metal stock or castings, check dimensions and alignments with gauges, micrometers and other measuring devices, and use advanced machine tools to machine awkward or complex internal shapes
  • Examine detailed drawings or specifications to find out job, material and equipment requirements
  • Check accuracy and quality of finished product
