What Stevedores do

• Prepare for loading by cleaning holds and containers and prepare stevedoring (ship-loading) gear
• Secure cargo to prevent it moving during voyages
• Place cargo on pallets, trays, flats and slings to enable the movement on and off the ships
• Using equipment move loads on or off the ship and direct the operation by using communication systems
• Keep records of all cargo unloaded, storage details if required and information for dispatching goods
• On ships arrival or departure assist moor or unmoor ships
• Carry out minor maintenance on all equipment used such as forklifts, trucks, front end loaders and fixed or mobile cranes
• Take leadership roles

Your chances of success will be better if you have...

• Interest in practical and manual work
• Physical fitness
• Sound communication, organisational and team skills
• The ability to give and take instructions and work well in a team
• School Certificate

• Employment for a minimum of one year
