Apprenticeship

What Motor Mechanics do

  • Discuss problems with vehicle operators, listen to and test engines with specialist equipment such as engines, transmissions, steering gear
  • Dismantle vehicles and check components; repair or replace faulty components, reassemble, clean and test e.g. engines, transmissions and steering gear
  • Tune engines using specialised equipment and make adjustments where appropriate
  • Perform minor body repairs
  • Use a variety of welding and other specialised equipment
  • Examine and repair electrical systems such as lighting, ignition and electronic fuel injection
  • Inspect vehicles, issue roadworthiness certificates, list work required if not roadworthy
