What Furniture Upholsterers do

  • Discuss with clients regarding choice of colour, fabric, style and cost
  • Stretch and staple lengths of webbing on to the underside of the furniture frame and interlace with other webbing
  • To prevent sideway movement lace tops of springs together and staple hessian to the frame
  • Cut and shape foam padding
  • Measure and cut covering material, join pieces of fabric together and tack on to the furniture frame
  • Attach calico to the underside of furniture and cover staples with decorative braid, trim, buttons or fancy nails
  • Repair furniture by replacing fabric covering, webbing, padding and springs.

  • Enjoyment of practical and manual work
  • Ability to work neatly and accurately
  • Interest in furniture making
  • Good physical fitness and colour vision
  • Good hand-eye coordination

The Future

  • Employment for minimum of one year
  • Employment areas include: furniture makers in the production of commercial, household, marine and caravan furniture, small businesses for antique, customised, renovations, repairs and recovery work or combine repair and manufacture.
