Stone Mason

What people in this role do:

  • View plans, specifications and designs required by clients
  • Evaluate the stone being used and bearing this in mind operate machines and hand tools to cut, shape and polish the stone
  • Cut and polish granite and marble slabs
  • Design, cut and carve important masonry, such as memorial tablets and bases for statues
  • Plan and design templates for detailed work
  • Utilise a variety of tools and equipment such as chisels, punches, hammers and sandblasters
  • Mark out, cut and chisel letters in stone
  • Construct walls and lay stone paving using stone slabs
  • Lay granite or marble floor tiles
  • Repair and restore stone facades to buildings and stonework churches and monuments

Your chances of success will be better if you have:

  • Enjoyment of practical work
  • Good general physical fitness
  • Ability to work at heights and outdoors
  • Ability to work well with your hands
  • Self-motivation
  • Aptitude for technical drawing
  • School Certificate
