Jockey

What people in this role do:

  • Receive and implement instructions from trainers and owners before races
  • Ride horses for exercises, race trials and races
  • Understand the abilities of each horse, and the best strategies to use to win each race
  • After races or exercise discuss horses performances with trainers
  • Report to stewards and other racing authorities anything that may have affected the horse’s performance in a race
  • Study videotapes of races and discuss with trainer to improve own and horse performance
  • Maintain own riding equipment, including saddles and boots

Your chances of success will be better if you have:

  • An interest in horses
  • Light athletic build
  • Good sense of balance and coordination
  • Steady nerves
  • Competitive

The Future

  • Employment for minimum of one year
  • Employment areas include: racehorse trainers or are self employed
