Wool Handler - Shearing Shed Hand

What people in this role do:

  • Help station hands to pen sheep for shearing
  • After shearing, pick up the fleece and throw it onto a large table for ‘skirting’ (that is, to remove dirty, stained or coloured pieces from the wool)
  • Prepare the wool for the wool classing by removing inferior and stained wool from fleeces as directed by a wool classer
  • Grade wool which has been skirted off fleeces
  • Roll the fleece into bundles and pass it to a wool classer for classing
  • Transfer fleeces into wool presses to form solid bundles called bales
  • Sweep the shed floor to help keep the fleeces clean and avoid contamination

Your chances of success will be better if you have:

  • Ability to work fast and with others
  • Practical and manual skills
  • Transport and are able to travel from property to property for work, sometimes in remote areas
  • Good physical fitness and strength
  • School Certificate
