Wool Handler - Shearing Shed Hand
What people in this role do:
- Help station hands to pen sheep for shearing
- After shearing, pick up the fleece and throw it onto a large table for ‘skirting’ (that is, to remove dirty, stained or coloured pieces from the wool)
- Prepare the wool for the wool classing by removing inferior and stained wool from fleeces as directed by a wool classer
- Grade wool which has been skirted off fleeces
- Roll the fleece into bundles and pass it to a wool classer for classing
- Transfer fleeces into wool presses to form solid bundles called bales
- Sweep the shed floor to help keep the fleeces clean and avoid contamination
Your chances of success will be better if you have:
- Ability to work fast and with others
- Practical and manual skills
- Transport and are able to travel from property to property for work, sometimes in remote areas
- Good physical fitness and strength
- School Certificate
