Agricultural Worker

What people in this role do:

  • Cultivate soil and sow crops by slashing and rotary hoeing
  • Use chemical sprays to control weeds
  • Control weeds and soil temperatures by planting crops between rows of trees and bushes
  • Construct trellises to support vines and fruit
  • Operate machinery and equipment including tractors, harvesters, forklifts and hand tools
  • Feed livestock and poultry, clear away animal waste and hose out operational areas
  • Prepare milking machinery, assist with all milking operations, clean and sterilise milking machines
  • Perform tasks involved in the breeding and raising of livestock such as shearing, dipping, branding, crutching, gelding, marking and assisting with artificial insemination
  • Muster sheep or cattle by horse or motorbike
  • Maintain and repair all structures, machinery and equipment

Your chances of success will be better if you have:

  • Mechanical and practical aptitude
  • Good general physical fitness
  • Interest in handling animals
  • Ability to work for long periods of time
  • Enjoyment for working outdoors, in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Ability to work in rural and sometimes isolated areas
  • School Certificate
