Horticulturalist
What people in this role do:
- Prepare fields, garden beds or lawn areas by correcting soil deficiencies, cultivating soil, adding fertilisers and composting
- Identify and treat pests and diseases on plants by herbicides
- Maintain gardens, lawns, and grass areas by fertilising, using growth regulators, chemicals, trimming and watering
- Use landscape plans and construct rockeries, paths or ponds and install irrigation and drainage systems
- Plant and transplant flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns
- Prune trees and hedges to maintain plants’ health
- Service and maintain equipment such as tools, lawn mowers and heavy machinery
- Develop long-term plans, set budgets, perform general administration duties and manage the financial aspects of the organisation or business.
Your chances of success will be better if you have:
- Enjoyment of practical and mechanical work
- Ability to undertake manual and heavy work
- Ability to work for long hours and outdoors in all sorts of weather conditions
- School Certificate
