Dogger
What people in this role do:
- Check loads do not exceed lifting capacity of cranes by, estimating size, shape, weight and centre of gravity
- Attach lifting devices, using clamps, hooks, bolts and knots, to hoisting equipment and moveable items
- Choose and use appropriate slings and grappling devices
- Cover sharp corners with padding to prevent damage to slings
- Where the load is not visible to crane or winch operators, hand signals, whistles or two-way radios are used. Doggers check for people or objects which may come in the path of the load and Guide loads into position as it descends
- Inspect and maintain all equipment including chains, slings, ropes, cables, hooks and lifting gear for damage and flaws such as cracks, wear, mildew and corrosion, and report problems
Your chances of success will be better if you have:
- Interest in outdoor, practical work
- Excellent hearing and vision
- Good level of physical fitness
- Ability to judge distances
- 18 years old or older
- No fear of heights
