Baker

What people in this role do:

• Ensure raw materials and equipment meet health and safety regulations
• Mix dough manually or by machine to the correct consistency then place in baking tins or trays
• Produce artisan breads
• Place tins or trays into ovens
• Set and monitor both the oven temperatures throughout the baking process and the appearance of the bread (cake or pastry)
• Remove bread from oven and allow to cool
• Decorate breads, cakes and pastries
• Operate equipment including slicing and wrapping machinery
• Provide good customer service including advice and recommendations

Your chances of success will be better if you have:

• An interest in practical work
• Good coordination
• Good general physical health
• No skin allergies or respiratory problems
• Good level of hygiene
• Sound interpersonal and communication skills
• School Certificate

The Future

• Employment for a minimum of four years
• Employment areas include: factories producing baked products, hot bread shops, specialty cake stores and ‘in house’ bakeries in supermarkets
