Youth Worker
What people in this role do:
- Inform young people about resources and community services and supervise youth clubs
- Organise programs to assist young people such as self development, accommodation, welfare and counselling and evaluate the programs
- Organise activities including sports, handicrafts, dancing, drama, hiking and bushwalking
- Initiate programs targeting the needs of young people living in the local area and represent young people
- Request funding through submissions for new programs and continuing projects
- Assist in developing policy affecting young people
- Establish small neighbourhood support groups to help young people experiencing difficulties
- Counsel and give support to young people experiencing difficulties such as unemployment, drug abuse, illness and homelessness
- Assess risks, provide intensive short-term crisis counselling and organise referrals for victims of family violence to appropriate agencies
- Work closely with teachers, social and welfare workers, police and other community groups
Your chances of success will be better if you have:
- Initiative and leadership skills
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently
- A non-judgmental attitude
- Ability to plan and organise
