Animal Carer

What people in this role do:

• Prepare and deliver food and water to animals
• Clean and prepare sleeping areas for animals
• Clear animal waste, clean, disinfect and look after animal enclosures and cages, and check locks
• Bathe and groom animals, and treat them with insect control chemicals
• Treat and minor injuries and assist veterinarians with major problems
• Transport animals between enclosures and cages
• Rescue and transport injured and neglected animals
• Assist with the humane killing of animals and management of dead animals
• Administer and maintain animal records
• Customer service

Your chances of success will be better if you have:

• Interest in practical and manual activities
• Not allergic to animal hair, fur, feathers and dust
• Ability to do physical and heavy work
• Ability to handle animals and look after their welfare
• Good observation skills
• A Methodical mind
• School Certificate

The Future

• Employment for a minimum of one year
• Employment with animal shelters, catteries, dog parlours or salons, kennels, pet shops, veterinary hospitals and clinics, zoos, circuses, theme parks and wildlife parks
